Maple Leafs Extravaganza: Your Weekend Guide to Sports, Fun, and Lunar New Year Festivities!



This weekend brings forth an array of diverse activities, including hockey events, a charitable walk to support those in need, and the commencement of Lunar New Year festivities. Additionally, commuters should take note of a temporary closure on Line 1 of the TTC.


Maple Leafs Outdoor Practice
As Toronto revels in the triumph of a prosperous NHL All-Star weekend, enthusiasts can immerse themselves in the hockey fervor with the Maple Leafs Outdoor Practice.
Following an authentic team training session on Thursday, the three-day affair continues with Activation Alley, showcasing a plethora of interactive installations throughout the day, complemented by culinary delights and merchandise stations.
On Friday afternoon, Leafs Alumni will grace Nathan Phillips Square, offering autograph signings before engaging in a Blue vs. White showdown on Saturday. The weekend will culminate with a public viewing party for the Leafs – Senators game, accompanied by a complimentary public skate session.


2024 Lunar New Year Celebrations
The Lunar New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, heralds the advent of a new year on the traditional Chinese lunisolar calendar. This jubilant occasion is marked by gatherings, sumptuous feasts, vibrant decorations, traditional attire, and time -honored rituals. This year signifies the transition from the Year of the Rabbit (2023) to the Year of the Dragon (2024). As part of the 15-day extravaganza, Toronto's Chinatown BIA is hosting Lunar New Year festivities at the Dragon City Mall and Chinatown Center on Saturday and Sunday.


Urban Art Exhibit
An indoor art market, free of charge, will be held this Sunday, showcasing the creations of over 85 Toronto-based artists and artisans. The Urban Art Exhibit will feature a diverse array of artistic expressions, including paintings, photography, sculptures , home décor, and other unique items. Culinary delights will be on offer from food vendors, accompanied by musical entertainment provided by a DJ.


Tickets can be acquired through their official website, and the event will take place at 1087 Queen Street West.


Winter Walk for Neighbours in Need
The Yonge Street Mission is organizing its inaugural Winter Walk for Neighbours in Need, in solidarity with street-involved youth, families facing hardships, and experiencing individuals poverty.
An impressive sum of over $85,000 has already been raised towards their target of $180,000. All proceeds will be channeled towards supporting the extensive range of programs and services offered by YSM.
The walk will commence at St. Paul's Bloor Street on Saturday at 4 pm, offering participants the choice of a two or five-kilometer fundraising trek.


TTC/GO Closures
Line 1 Yonge-University will experience a cessation of service between St. George and St. Andrew stations over the weekend, owing to essential track maintenance. Shuttle bus operations will be suspended due to concurrent construction activities on surface routes. Commuters are advised to utilize streetcars or the Yonge street portion of Line 1. Normal service is anticipated to resume at 6 am on Monday.


Road Closures
Ongoing citywide lane closures include:
- University Avenue will be reduced to a single in both directions between College Street and Queen Street West, with a duration of seven months to facilitate various infrastructure projects.
- Southbound Bayview Avenue will be inaccessible from Parkhurst Boulevard to Eglinton Avenue East, from 7 am to 7 pm until Feb. 9.
- Broadview Avenue, spanning from Gerrard Street East to Danforth Avenue, will be closed to southbound traffic and restricted to a single northbound lane until November, to facilitate TTC streetcar track replacement.
- Teston Road in Vaughan will remain closed between Pine Valley Drive and Weston Road until the conclusion of the year, to accommodate road reconstruction and bridge enhancements.
- Queen Street is entirely closed to vehicular traffic between Bay and Victoria Streets, to facilitate construction of a new station for the Ontario Line subway, with a projected duration of at least four-and-a-half years until 2027.
- Lake Shore Boulevard West, from Rees Street to Spadina Avenue, is reduced to two lanes until May 31, 2024, to facilitate Enwave lane construction.
- Northbound Yonge Street is reduced to a single between Wellington and King Streets, for TTC construction works extending into 2024. -
Avenue Road, from Yorkville Avenue to Elgin Avenue, has its northbound lanes obstructed due to an emergency valve replacement.
- Two northbound lanes of Yonge Street, from King Street to Wellington Street, are shuttered for TTC construction until Sept. 30, 2024.
- Two westbound lanes of Lake Shore Boulevard East, from Cherry Street to Carlaw Avenue, are closed until April 10, 2024.
- Westbound and eastbound lanes along Finch Avenue West, from Dufferin Street to Wilmington Avenue, are closed from 7 am to 7 pm for sanitary truck sewer improvements until March 31, 2024.
- Eglinton Avenue West, from Royal York Road to the Northbound 427 Ramp, will experience lane occupation from 9 am to 4 pm until June 1, 2024.
